World Tsunami Awareness Day

About 16 years ago, just as the Christmas celebrations were ending around the world, a massive earthquake of magnitude 9.1—third-largest earthquake on record—shook Indian Oceans off the Sumatran coast. The vigorous tremors were followed by a tsunami of unprecedented scale, claiming lakhs of lives across several countries. India was one of the worst-affected countries and lost more than 10,000 people on that fateful day. The Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004 claimed the highest number of lives for any tsunami in recorded history—an estimated 2,27,000 across 14 countries.
